Information
Black Horse Cottage
Bed & Breakfast is open for most of the year, with the
exception of Christmas and when we take a break ourselves.
Hickling
Broad is the largest of Norfolk’s Broads, covering more than 140
hectares. Hickling Broad National Nature Reserve is an internationally
important wetland habitat comprising
extensive areas of reed bed and grazing marsh.
Endangered species such as the swallowtail
butterfly,
marsh harrier, and bittern
as well as summer
visitors like the spoonbill, are to be found on its marshes and
grassland.
Walking trails include the Swallowtail Trail and the Bittern Trail. The
Weavers Way national long-distance path runs through the Reserve
and past Black Horse Cottage. The visitor centre at the Reserve
is open every day, Easter to September. The Broad is also extensively
used for leisure and recreation with Hickling Windsurfing Club and
Hickling Broad Sailing Club both based on the Broad. Both motor
and sailing craft can be hired locally.
The
area is a haven for ornithologists, nature lovers and walkers with
beautiful countryside all around. Also cyclists will love the quiet
lanes, and there are a number of places, offering cycle hire. There
are lovely sandy beaches at Sea Palling and Waxham, just a couple
of miles away and there is access to the whole of Norfolk’s rich
and diverse coastline. The village has shops and pubs, which serve
food.
